Recalculating Releases Single: Based on the Comedy of Ray Romano

Recalculating’s new album, Do You Like to Laugh, opens with their single, “Based on the Comedy of Ray Romano” which immediately reminded me of one of my favorite bands from Baltimore, Landspeedrecord! mixed with Nation of Ulysses mixed with The Talking Heads i.e. good fucking shit!

I’ll be honest, I don’t know shit about Ray Romano. I never watched his show, and I never caught more than the occasional clip of his standup, but that isn’t really needed to enjoy this song. The line “life is performative” could be summation of what it’s like to be a performer on stage or reflective of how much of us perform on social media today. It actually makes me think of an interview that Tim Barry (Avail) did on One Life, One Chance hosted by Toby Morse (H2O) where Tim said that his shows, solo in particular, are akin to stand up comedy where he’s up there telling stories while using his acoustic guitar as a prop. In my own podcast about stage banter, I’ve pondered how much stand up comedy plays into the role bands have on stage when talking between songs. But I digress since none of this really talks about the song.

The song opens with a dope bassline and some fancy hi-hat work followed by a talking intro that reminds me a bit of when either the Dead Milkmen, or Weird Al do some spoken word in their songs. These are all overlayed with rad harmonized back ups and just the right amount of well placed distorted guitar riffage.

It’s a great opening track as it almost feels like an MC introducing the show.

Check it out on Bandcamp and buy it if you dig it:

I’m a live album record label, so I love when I can find a sick live video to share:

Speaking of live, their next show is on 11/20 in Williamsburg Brooklyn at Main Drag. It’s a little over two hour drive for me, but I’m putting it on my calendar for sure.

You can listen to them on their Spotify as well as on my Punk Playlist and my Indie Rock/Garage Rock playlist!

Make sure to follow them on IG and FB too.

You can also listen on their Spotify or my Punk / Hardcore Playlist or my Garage Rock /Indie Rock Playlist
