You Had Me at “Fuck Florida”!
Dominic Delaney follows that punk troubadour a la Frank Turner, Billy Bragg, Tim Barry, Jacob -Danielsen-Moore, Sticky Steve and more. As a former captive of Florida for 15 years who managed to escape to NY, I can fully endorse his sentiment in the title if not his final admission that he’s actually a Floridian…something I was never able to accept.
He’s playing a most clean i.e. limited to no distortion on his guitar backed by a solid rhythm section of bass and drums. I don’t know if this is his normal backing band or just friends who helped on this song, but they did a dope as job. The song is catchy as fuck which after perusing their back catalog is on par with the level of kick ass quality of their songs.
In the vein of Tim Barry, there’s that story teller quality with mention of places that only people in West Palm Beach or Lakeworth, FL in specific or Florida in general would recognize with each place peppered with drops of names of people that I’m just going to accept as real. I’m always a sucker for a good story song, so I dig this a lot.
It ends as one of those love hate relationships that acknowledges that while Florida certainly deserves the middle-finger response, it’s also made them who they are.
This falls under the “How the fuck did I miss seeing this artist before I left Florida???”
Don’t make my same mistake, if their shows pack as much energy as this song, then I’m sure they’re a rad time.
But don’t just trust me, check it out below:
