From The Other Side’s Newest Single, “Toxic Heart”, melds pop punk and melodic metal in all the right ways!

You mention Australia to someone and ask them to name a band, most will say AC/DC and then depending on their age they might say Men at Work or Silverchair or if they are a punk like me they might mention The Saints, Frenzal Rhomb or The Living End (I played a sick show with them in 2004 in DC), but nobody would mention From the Other Side….yet. Give it time. I’m trying to decide if they’re name is because they are on the other side of the world…at least in my northern hemisphere perspective, if they are fans of Fallout Boy or if they love the soundtrack and movie Greatest Showman. I’ll accept either as a viable answer.

If I were a lazy reviewer, I might compare them to Paramore, but that’s far from accurate. I’d say they sit in their own world but remind more mostly of a more metallic Tsunami Bomb. I could have totally seen them rocking the Vans Warped Tour in the 1990s!

“Toxic Heart” starts off with a great metal sounding intro and then hits a rocking verse punctuated by rad double bass rolls. The pre-chorus is where the punk rock really shines through with that dope guitar riff before it gets into that crazy good chorus hook. This is one of those songs that the average music lover would enjoy while also hitting all the right places to earn them those coveted Jawbreaker punk points.

The growl towards the end gets even more into that metal or screamo vein. I’m just going to assume that singer Jett Rose did those guttural growls because I’ve seen enough vocalists that identify as female that can bring the rage.

Lyrically, it hits onto an experience we all have of someone not only holding you back but hoping for your failure. Not as blunt as Suicidal Tendecies’ “You Can’t Bring Me Down”, but the message is inherently the same, and it’s a universal one that I think we can all get behind.

Based on some interviews I watched, they are a fairly new band with a lot of hopes for the future. I’m stoked to see which way they go, they got enough punk to travel the DIY circuit with small labels like mine or they could go for that brass ring and get mainstream acceptance. Or perhaps they will thread the needle and get both.

All that being said, it’d be killer to catch them live, but since I ain’t going to Australia anytime soon, they need to get their asses to the states! I’ll be there then for sure!
