Premiere of SLUTAVVERKNING’s “Grisar” is grimy, dirty, disturbing and hard not too love

Slutavverkning’s newest single “Grisar” is a grimy, dirty and disturbing song. Hailing from Stockholm, Sweden, I can’t understand what they are singing, and I had to look up the meaning of the song to find out that Grisar means pig–more on this in a moment. When I read about the band, I saw they were from various other bands, but the only one that I really knew was Opeth. This is not Opeth. This is The Melvins or Sonic Youth mixed with hardcore and metal. But it’s also more than that. Amidst it’s growling vocals and downstroked plodding mayhem, it makes space for dissonant and discordant jazz.

Which brings us back to the pig, the saxophone “solo” in the song sounds like a pig being slaughtered. It’s both an amazing use of the instrument and a deeply disturbing and tragic sound. I’m pretty sure I’d say this even if I hadn’t spent 1/3 of my life as a vegetarian or vegan. When coupled with the imagery of the video which uses colors and graphic effect camera work to intensify the feeling without showing any actual violence or pain.

As vocalist Jon EEkström stated, “I knew that I wanted to write conceptual lyrics about the not-so-flattering shades of human nature, but wasn’t sure how to frame it. Then I heard those squeals in the saxophone solo, and remembered a story about a man who lived on a nearby mountain with lots of pigs. They were his friends so he let them roam free, causing frequent conflict with the local authorities. He ended up starting his own political party, the Pig Party.”

This song and the video most certainly frame the dark side of humanity. If you’re as curious as I am about how the rest of the album will sound, you’ll be putting away your nickels waiting for it to be released on September 1st when the full album Längtans Törst is out on all digital platforms and limited vinyl and cassette via Feral Cuts

Grisar is the second single from Levande Charader, following. The album will be out on all digital streaming platforms on September 1st. Limited vinyl and cassette editions will be available via Feral Cuts.
