Paranormal Arson Release New Self-Titled Album

This my kind of metal, dirty fucking sludge death metal with narrative story-are lyrics growled at you with all the guttural vehemence of a rabid pack of starved feral wolverines.

If you’re looking for the super-polished death metal then this won’t work for you. It’s very DIY and reminds me of what I’d hear on early demos of bands like Napalm Death or Discharge.

There is also just the right tough of noise in there that would have made them a perfect fit for sharing the stage with Unsane who I last saw then my old band played with them in Florida.

While no lyrics were provided, the info behind the song really helps get into the storytelling nature and helps to see how the vocals and the music really are crafted to fit within each songs theme.

For instance in “Grave Robbing in Texas” based on “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” you really get that horror flick feel and especially with the sounds you’d expect to hear as madman’s chainsaw scrapes against metal on his way to carving you into bits and pieces.

“Paranormal Arson” tells a story of an unsolved haunting involve ash filled sealed milk hotels, translocated cattle, and most of all random and spontaneous fires (Maybe the ghosts of Spinal Tap drummers from the past?) The riffs give off both a haunting open feeling but also crack open your skull with ferocity and then ends with a rad cymbal roll that sounds like it might have been done with mallets to get that soft sound.

Some dope cymbal work (fuck off I’m a drummer) then opens the next song, a cover of Terrorizer’s “Fear of Napalm” which if you know the song, you know it’s fucking killer.

This is followed by “Saitama Bloodbath” which seems to want to remind you that this is not some prog rock black metal band, this is some fucking caveman fuck you up and down shit that just wants to crush you under the sheer force of their riffs.

"The Name Dies With Me" is apparently about Hector Salamanca's (Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul) death, and how he took his rival Gus Fring with him. You can almost hear the doom music in here and a little bit more almost of an epic undertone that is just under the surface waiting to come out but is instead forced to eat fucking sludge and stay down. I also have to say for being a 7 minute long song, it’s actually my favorite. I love the backing vocals that that do the call and response - fucking gnarly in the best way.

You’ll have to check out the rest on your own and make your own judgements on the rest of the songs.
