There are genres of music that aren't for everyone. Anyone familiar with the more extreme side of heavy metal knows what we're talking about. Hardcore, death metal, black metal, grind and all the variations that come out of the various contaminations of these styles. The bands belonging to these currents are the most violent and brutal expression of music that fascinates and exalts hundreds of thousands of people at all latitudes.

You will never find these records as inserts in newspapers or in anthologies distributed on newsstands. Only certain record companies deal, and we would also say with great pride, with the distribution of these records which represent the diffusion of a frank and destructive word.

The DCXPC LIVE label is one of them. This label was notable for releasing several records recorded live at Lou's LMGA in Orlando, Florida. All albums released under this label are the purest embodiment of underground music performed live by the best metal and punk bands around.

On this occasion we will take care of the performance of the song Devour by the band Moat Cobra recorded on April 22, 2022 at the now legendary Orlando venue during their performance. The song is extracted from the DcxPC Live&Dead vol.1 album which can be pre-ordered from July 14th 2023.

Moat Cobra are a sludgy, metallic, chaotic, hardcore band born in Orlando in 213. The single we are listening to is the first piece written by the band after the last line up change that saw bassist Robert Oppenheimer join who completed the lineup composed by Dave Moreno on guitar, Al Serrano on drums and Brett Beavers on vocals.

A feedback sound opens the recording as the drums strike four. The piece starts with an introductory riff that immediately highlights the sonic power of the quartet. The drums are pounding between heavy rhythms and outbursts in blast beat. Brett screams like a demon with all the ferocity of his voice.

The riffs and trilled note passages are rooted in the best tradition of the genre. Listening to the piece we imagine the wild pogo under the stage getting more and more violent as the piece proceeds destroying everything it meets. The slowed down parts have an incredible groove and the song leaves no time to breathe. After about two minutes the piece closes and we can hear the audience screaming and applauding.

A true concentration of energy and power!

The “DCxPC Live” project has been one of the balms of energy and originality on the world music scene. Bringing rock talents of different probabilities, being able to be veterans or brilliant exponents in the alternative scene, in live recordings capturing all the possible virulence of the shows, has generated an imposing collection when it comes to organic material and with excellence.

The visibility before the public and specialized critics of this material that emerged during the social isolation of the pandemic, and was later released as live vinyl albums with covers that pay homage to VMLive records from the nineties, is increasingly growing in monumental proportions across the independent spectrum. In addition to complete live shows, there is the initiative to distribute presentations from the past, always sticking to the news in a new format, as we have here now: “Live & Dead” (live on one side and “dead” studio on the other) is the new stylistic incursion, with Orlando hardcore sensation MOAT COBRA as its protagonist.

Formed by Brett Beavers (vocals), Dave Moreno (guitar), Al Serrano (drums) and Roberto Oppenheimer (bass), since 2013 it has been impacting with its absolutely insane releases and shows, and nothing more comes from that than the participation in this SEMINAL endeavor! “DCxPC Live & Dead Vol. 1” with MOAT COBRA is anthological, and we will break down the work track by track for you…

The “LIVE side” starts with the almost extreme metallic distortion and garage “Bloods Croup”, where the incredible vocal subliminally shouted, exasperates the entire identity of the American bard on stage! It's a petard, chaotic, apocalyptic and overwhelming, where we feel each premise of chaos in gradual levels. Raw, direct and masterfully visceral!

The broken riff of “Devour”, refers to a machine gun fired automatically without the bullets ending up, just like in eighties action movies. The feeling of imminent racing brings tension and danger, and as a “magic” trump card, it even has a very powerful chorus, those sticky ones and perfect to be shouted at the top of your lungs by a maddened crowd!

Crazy beats and a more drawn-out intro lead the spectrum of “Bad Star”, where the “dirt” of this stage recording together with the crazy rhythmic variation, refers to great blasts of grindcore and doom simultaneously, in the same “capsule” and this is FANTASTIC! “Singularity” is one of those “rocks” soaked in metallic permeations that is born with the undoubted status of supreme HINO, such as the power it unleashes. It's really AWESOME how we are automatically entered into this sensory process, our bodies move to stage-dive and pogo wheel as if we had immediately teleported to that state!

Gladius Vulgarius” reaffirms Al Serrano's talent in front of the drums, where we again have this furtive dialogue of a melancholy dragged with furious crazed paradigms. “Soffo Cone” is hardcore in its ultimate quintessence, while still referring to the irresistible groove that plagues the moment of the chorus. It refers to New York legends like Agnostic Front, but always exhausting personality through the pores of its conception, denoting the group's incisive artistic identity.

“Permian” has Brett Beavers summoning the audience for the final detonation, and that is exactly what unfolds in each chord, roar and beat of the oiled kitchen. We really have an imminent sense of the absurdly exhausted “end of the world”, with the right feedback and more than sure participation from the audience. INCREDIBLE!

By the way, this is the first song of our “Lado Dead”, and we only have the “cleanest” musical insanity in this studio version, in the most cadenced pasts. Moreover, we realize that nothing can stop the sonic fury of an irreproachable firecracker like “Permian”! As with “Bad Star”, “Gladius Vulgarius” and “Blood Crops”, we obviously have a “cleaner” hearing due to the recording, but at no point is the “heartless power” of the band threatened…

MOAT COBRA is always a heavy and extreme sensory journey, taking us to an unprecedented world, inside a “runaway rollercoaster”! “Prelude” is dense and loaded with atmospheric precepts, showing a greater influence of the experimental alternative scenario, including voice effects traveling on a journey into the unknown. It seems to be the gateway to the seminal “bashing” of “Lick The Knife”, with its riffs being hammered to exhaustion, at the same time that accurate melodies are unleashed without mercy!

We have no doubt that it will reach new heights within the genre, reaching even the most inhospitable corners of the planet, because its final result is truly SENSATIONAL! MOAT COBRA couldn't be a better debut for the “DCxPC Live & Dead Vol. 1"

As an avid lover of both Punk rock and vinyl, I would argue that one would be hard-pressed to tap into that niche better than our good friends at DCxPC Live now presenting Moat Cobra DCxPC Live & Dead Vol. 1

They have been issuing a series of live performances on vinyl by punk, hardcore, and metal bands since 2021. Happy to report that I’ve been able to snag a few on the way, seeing as how they sell out rather quickly! Indeed, DCxPC is an invaluable resource for discovering new underground/DIY/Independent music as well as hearing exclusive performances by bands you are might already be a fan of.

With many more volumes of the live vinyl series scheduled for release throughout this year and next, they’re releasing the FIRST of a new vinyl series on July 14th featuring hardcore heavy hitters Moat Cobra. What makes this a “Volume One” in the catalog you ask? It’s the first in DCxPC’s newest format titled, “Live & Dead.”

Side A of the record being the “Live” side (what we’ve grown to know and love about DCxPC) and Side B of the record being the “Dead” side, I.E., studio recordings. I am personally stoked about this new format, as I think it’s an ultimate way to showcase the depth of an artist. Not only does it convey the energy these bands put into live performances, but it also provides the listener with another level of perspective being able to hear the studio adaptations.

Moat Cobra is a great band to kick that series off with, as their hybrid of hardcore punk and sludge metal transcends that energy brilliantly in both formats. The first single and previously unreleased song, “Devour (Live)” hits the streaming services July 14th, the very same day that pre-orders for the vinyl open up!

One thing I love about ordering vinyl from DCxPC is the way they raffle off classic records to sweeten the deal. In previous releases, they have raffled off corresponding volumes of the VML series in which they were inspired by.

With the Moat Cobra release, they’ll be raffling off the band’s favorite live album: nonother than beloved PNW hardcore legends Botch, and the Live Recording of their final show titled “Botch 061502.” Needless to say, I’ll be keeping a close eye out for that pre-order date to get my hands on this record and an opportunity to be in that raffle! As I mentioned before, these records do tend to sell out and there were only 200 pressed for this release, so keep it on the radar!

On to the record! The 12″-inch vinyl is comprised of 15 tracks. Side B includes 8 tracks from Moat Cobra’s pinnacle full-length album “Deimos,” and each one of those tracks have a corresponding live version on Side A.

“Devour” is the standout track to me, not only because it’s previously unreleased, but it piques my curiosity as to whether or not it’s a foreshadowing of more new music to come! The direction musically sounds like they are leaning heavily (pun intended) on the Thrash Metal ethos of their sound. Bouncing back and forth between pulsating double bass and blast beats, the mid-range false chord screams have a cadence that reminds me of Slayer.

Yet, the track still possesses moments of underlying crowd-killing rhythms that remind me of heavier hardcore punk bands like Knocked Loose and, as the band would cite as influence, Botch. Others have described the band’s unique sound as “Sludge” or “Swamp” Metal, which I totally agree with. The guitar licks are deliciously filthy, and I am totally here for it.

Hailing from Orlando, Florida, Moat Cobra are:

  • Brett Beavers (vocals)

  • Al Serrano (drums

  • Dave Moreno (guitar)

  • Robert Oppenheimer (bass)

Of particular notability for the band, they are consistently nominated for Best Metal Band in Orlando 3 years running in the Orlando Weekly publication. Give the guys a vote HERE! Winners are to be announced in August. Best wishes and good luck to the band from us here at #LT1KF!

The live performances were recorded at Uncle Lou’s in Orlando on 04-22-22. Mixing and Mastering was engineered by Joshua Dobbs at Danger Room Recording Studios. Cover design by Jessica Hadas

DCXPC are back with their brand new format Live&Dead, this time introducing the Florida-based metal band Moat Cobra. DCxPC Live & Dead Vol. 01 Presents Moat Cobra is a mix of live recordings on side A “Live” and studio recordings on side B “Dead”, all pressed on limited 200 copies of violet vinyl, with a pre-order opening on the 14th of Jul 2023. With Moat Cobra‘s diverse well-mixed elements, this record is one to not be missed if you’re an extreme music fan. Let me tell you more about it.

Moat Cobra kickstarts side A (Live) with the heaviness of Blood Crops, an aggressive tune that comes last on side B (Dead) offering a high note ending, while creating a smooth inviting build-up for the brutality to come on the live show with its interesting jazzy drumming, dense pounding riffs, and heavily dynamic structure. Devour comes next building on its predecessor’s intense sound and pushing it even further into a faster, attacking pace, boosting their live set’s energy and taking their fast powerful flow to the next level. Opening with a big sound and slow hard-hitting groove, Bad Star comes next. Reserving the 4th slot on the “Dead” side, Bad Star has a raw groove with a changing structure with dynamic twists and turns that kept it fresh and interesting, and showed Moat Cobra cleverly handling those shifts in a balanced organized arrangement lacking no anger or hard-banging moments. Singularity is where hell gates break open, Moat Cobra mixes their punk-ish attitude and thrashy influences into a riffing hurricane that occupies the 6th slot on the “Dead” side, keeping the heaviness and intensity intact till the end. The attacking riffs and vocals feel like they’re coming at us with full force, keeping the listeners intimidated and following their riffs and blasting beats from beginning to the very end while adding a tint melodic touch to their guitar work that made the riffs catchier and even more interesting. Cementing their raw brutal sound as we’re getting closer to the “Live” side’s end, comes Gladius Vulgarius. Coming at the 5th spot on both sides, Gladius Vulgarius hits with slow dense riffs and a smooth flow that guides the listeners throughout its well-arranged shifts. I believe this is my favorite so far off the record, as it shows Moat Cobra‘s detailed writing and their focus on delivering such diverse structures and compositions without compromising their brutality. Soffo Cone comes next showing no mercy with its rollercoaster riff and raw expressive vocals. Its harshness and brutality are loud and clear, all in a short precise dose that’ll make you play it over and over again. Ending the “Live” side with the same high energy it started with comes Permian. Another brief condensed tune that’ll get everyone that’s listening to either the “Live” or “Dead” sides off their seats crazily headbanging, alive version shows how those guys brilliantly close their set leaving the crowd asking for more.

Moving to the B side “Dead” we’ll find a couple of tracks that were not included in the live set Prelude and Lick the Knife. Prelude opens with a fluid riff and catchy playful drumming, it has a melodic core that showed another side of Moat Cobra‘s writing and it acted as a build-up to the next song Lick the Knife. Lick the Knife has a sludgy hard-hitting sound that gave its aggressive vocals lots of depth. Its heavy flow pushes forward creating a highly dynamic structure with some unpredictable shifts that keep the listeners hooked and entertained with its cool build-ups that allowed every section to be properly listened to setting the mood for the next and so on.

DCxPC Live & Dead Vol. 01 Presents Moat Cobra is a cool record that introduces the listeners to Moat Cobra‘s music in two different ways at once, showing us their energy and chemistry on the “Live” side while giving us a more polished and writing-focused version on the studio “Dead” side, listening to both will easily get you hooked on their music as both offer different vibes and feelings with 100% guaranteed headbanging. Looking forward to more from Moat Cobra and DCxPC, keep on rocking. Cheers!
