pulses. Release New Single “Them Phones” (feat. JER)
At first listen, I’m immediately struck by something I heard on the (Don’t) Quit Your Day Job Podcast by my buddy Paul wherein he had on Hans Gruber and the Die Hards, and they “debated” why ska sucks and what it takes to be considered ska. You see Paul hates ska, but he loves Hans Gruber. But are they really ska? To which “Hans” said the beauty of ska is that if you throw in a couple of upstrokes, you’re a ska band, but the rest of it is boundless, and you can create any other sound or style around that. I bring this up because Pulses is a ska band of sorts, but there is so much going on and so many styles happening that it reminds me of Hans Gruber or even of like System of a Down or maybe Mr. Bungle. I just can’t pin this shit down. But what I can do is tell you that its fucking fuck. Like total fuck. Love the fuck. From an old DMV dude, I know if I was back in that area I’d be checking this band at every local show they play. It’s high energy and has a grab bag of all of your punk and ska sub genres in one fucking song.
