Sickrecy Releases New EP: Split with Barren

Where to start? My first thought when I heard a song from Sickrecy was of Magrudergrind and Assholeparade, but after listening to the full EP, Split with Barren, I realized that there is so much more than grindcore happening here. You’ve got D-beats, death metal, crustpunk all of which is held together by distinct riffage. I kind of make me think this is what you’d get if you took Iron Reagan combined with Napalm Death with just a dash of Nuclear Assault. This is taking grindcore to a whole new level of fuck.

Song 1 “Open…” starts with some slow riffage with killer sounding drums and gives you some dope grooves with some samples over top until some rapid double bass takes over and then the song ends. As the name implies it’s the opener. It almost sounds like a crowd at the start of the song, or maybe I’m just thinking that because I could see this being rad as an opening song.

Song 2: In the bands own words, “…Up for Ignorance” is about how we choose to be ignorant about the fact that Europe once again is going deeper into the cesspit of fascism and autocracy and we choose not to see the problems with our current politics as the citizens is being fed this idiocracy.” which doesn’t sound too different form the world America lives in now where almost half the country seem to support a 90+indictment facing, serial lying, convicted sexual assaulter, and all around fuck face for our president because he’s “strong”. This was the first song I heard, and fucking love it. Love the goddamn blast beats, love the guitar solo, love the ability to switch from blast beats to more of a hardcore or d-beat without effort. Fucking love it. Oh, and I noticed how the ellipses at the end of the first song title feed into the ellipses at the start of this second song, so it reads “Open…Up for Ignorance”.

Song 3: Slavestate” follows the same content vein as it attacks people who blindly follow a political party whether it’s in Sweden or elsewhere. Amazing blend of death, crust punk, hardcore, and grindcore. I have a few favorite parts: From like 1:40-2:00 the drumming, the screaming, the guitars all of it like a cup filled to the brim with fuck. Goddamn that shit is tight. And of course the drummer in me loves that final drum roll that ends the song.

Song 4: “Of Course We Do” attacks commercialism particularly in beauty. Lyrically it reminds me of Luxury Teeth’s song, “Vanity is a Fuck” which they will be releasing soon. I can see fists in the air chanting back “Of course we do” during the chorus. Dope guitar lead in there, but it’s a little buried. Definitely feel more of the hardcore in this song.

Song 5: “Parasites of Power” starts with a heavy groove that I could see people doing some karate kick shit to in the pit before it lays down some solid thrash overtop perfect double bass. But as soon as you’re settled in, it hits the blast beats and than back to a more hardcore beat. So much the fuck in so little fucking time. Love that vocal wail around the 1:45 mark.

Check it out yourself on Bandcamp and buy their vinyl! I’m putting it on my wish list for damn sure!

So yeah besides the bands I already mentioned, I’m sure this is also great for fans of Lock Up, Gadget, Axis Of Despair, The Arson Project, Feastem and Terrorizor

If you’re in Europe, they are playing the 25th anniversary of Obscene Extreme festival this year together with Napalm Death, Immolation, Autopsy and Wolfbrigade among others. A week later they are playing with Gruesome and Gravestone at the Malmö Massacre pre-party (Sweden) called A Gruesome night to be alive. Another show, this time in Copenhagen (Denmark) is booked in November together with the Danish band Throwe.

Since I run a live album vinyl record label, I always search for some live video, so if you can’t catch them live, check out this live video:
