Dreaded Laramie Release New Single: “Break Up Songs”

Call them power pop, call them pop punk, just make sure you call them fucking awesome too. This is a melodic toe-tapping song that I just can’t stop listening too. Which of course just makes it that much sadder that I missed their set at Fest 21 this year. Sooo many bands, not nearly enough time to see each band you want…especially if you take time to eat anything besides pizza. If they’re back next year, I’ll make sure I don’t miss them again.

Musically it reminds me a bit of Juliana Hatfield, particularly Only Everything, which I played a lot in 1995, or Sleater Kinney in that it’s a definite rock song with rad riffs, but also very clear melody and personal lyrics that anyone with a soul can connect to (So that means you soulless fucks who don’t put shopping carts back at the grocery store won’t get this). But rest assured despite the comparison, this band brings their own unique approach, so this is far from any sort of carbon copy. They put their own fresh spin that separates them from the past and places them squarely into their own deserved spot. A decade from now, I’ll be comparing bands to them and pondering how they influenced some new band.

I love how many dynamics and changes are fit into a song that’s under three minutes. This is how you write a song that keeps my punk short attention span following along past the 90 second mark. Shit there’s even two guitar solos, and I dug them both.

This is their first release through Smartpunk Records with more on the way, so keep your eyes and ears open ‘cause you won’t want to miss this. While I’m waiting for their next release, I’ll be watching their tour schedule to see if they come to NY, so I can catch them live before next October.

Also quick comment on the name. My first thought was that it was a reference to Laramie Cigarettes from The Simpsons, but then I recalled a decade old meme about some family with shitty kids and one of them was called “the dreaded Laramie”, so I’m guessing that’s where the name is from. Feel free to confirm or denounce my theory in the comments.
