Che Arthur Releases New Single: “Sliver”

Some of you may know Che Arthur from their time in Pink Avalanche or Atomicpocketknife, if so when you listen to their new single, “Sliver”, you’ll recognize that distinct timber that is characteristic of their voice, but it will be accompanied by music that is more aggressive and posthardcore than in previous projects. You can year the musical influences from bands such as Husker Du, Dinosaur Jr. and Jawbox. I also hear aspects of bands like Jawbreaker in the way the vocals are mixed just below the surface of the instruments instead of our in front, so they almost blend in.

Even without lyrics the song would evoke feelings of struggle, but with the lyrics that struggle is tinged with a “sliver of hope”, so it reminds me of what one might feel when watching a movie where the protagonist is at near rock bottom, and seems doomed to failure, but there is still that seemingly impossible slight chance that they can overcome.

The nearly three minute song never really pulls back. It comes in with fuzzy distortion on earnest verses punctuated by plaintiff chorus without any significant change via a bridge or breakdown until it just ends.
