Storm Boy Releases New EP: “With a Gasp That Reached to the Sky”
Back in October, I did a review of Storm Boy’s single, “The Steam in the Room”, so I was super stoked to get he full four-song EP to review! Listened to the whole thing through 2-3 times before I started this review, and I was immediately taken back to one of my favorite split albums: Leatherface and Hot Water Music. If you dug that release (and if you have heard it, I know you did), then you’re gonna love these bangers.
The first track of this new EP is “Orca” which is about a yacht smashing orca named White Gladis, but its more than just a song about a whale. If I’m not overthinking it, it’s also a metaphor about how those of us resist people taking away our space to be ourselves and live in our own ways. Musically it starts of with a rad drum beat with guitars coming with a dope staccato riffage. There several cool guitar fills overtop the palm-muted guitar riffs to keep things interesting. And the break down back to opening drum beat into a sick as drum fill that shows skill without over embellishment. Getting to the end, we are treated again with a really awesome melodic guitar part over the more straight foward punk riff.
The second track is “Plosivs” which is just laden with fucking great guitar parts that blend and accent each other all held together with a rhythm section that knows how to provide a backbone of the song, so the best parts of the song are felt not just heard. Love the way the bass and the one guitar lead are in sync and providing a full complement of each other. There’s another great break that allows the drummer to tastefully show off their skill. This is a band of musicians that can not only play individually, but have learned how to blend with each other for the purpose of writing a killer song.
The third track is “From Your Mouth…” which is an anthemic song that touches on the difficult topic of dementia. I am in love with this song. The verse was so energetic, and I could feel the emotion behind the lyrics, and then the big group chorus just came in and hooked me. And whatever that dope as aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh vocal part was during the second verse—fuck yeah!
