Broke Even Releases Two New Singles: “Turn the Volume Down” and “You Dying”
Broke Even musically reminds me like some fucked up version of Atom and His Package, Dead Milkmen and They Might Be Giants. Lyrically, the first song “Turn the Volume Down” with it’s use of terms like “prison industrial complex” reminds me a little of the posi-punk folk of an upstate NY band called Evil Robot Us or some political pop punk band like Operation: Cliff Clavin that I’d hear on a Plan-It X Records release.
The second song, “You Dying” is a dark pop punk song with synth, distorted guitar and more. There is a touch of Mr. Bungle in the sense that shit just goes all over the place at times. The song is more personal and focuses on the anxiety one feels, although I have to admit the jarring changes caused me a little bit of anxiety. I’m good with that because at least I was feeling something. Why is some part of this song making me think of Mork and Mindy?
I’m three times through each song, and I’m finding new things each time. I’ll be adding this shit to a personal playlist because I know I’ll be able to find something new to enjoy at each listen.
