Simesky+Fritch’s Newest Singles Have Me Wanting to Dance All Night at The Local Goth Bar!
The moment I heard Simesky + Fritch’s newest single, “Back and Down Again”, I was immediately taken back to 1991 when I was all of 15. My boss at Roy Rogers, Mr. Feldt (The one and only time in my life, I couldn’t call a boss by their first name–kinda like Mr. Burns in the Simpsons), took me and my girlfriend to see Depeche Mode and The The. I was a metal head who was slowly becoming a hardcore punk, but I had a soft spot for gothic dance music especially with that 80’s New Wave sound. In other words, that soft spot went all gooey when I heard this song as well as the other song they shared, “Colour Running Away”.
“Back and Down Again” starts off soft and comes in with plaintiff vocals reminiscent of Roxy Music or Depeche Mode with just a touch of Peter Steele from Type O Negative. The music is slow and melancholy with guitar leads that could have been straight out of a 1980’s glam metal band if they were depressed. This could have been a soundtrack in any number of 80’s movies although the one that comes to mind is Lost Boys. I could definitely have seen my goth friends swaying to this on the dance floor at Goth night at Tracks in Washington D.C. right in between Sisters of Mercy or Nine Inch Nails.
“Colour Running Away” is faster paced and more danceable. It reminds me more of something I might hear on The Breakfast Club soundtrack or someone that I would have seen opening for David Bowie or The Cure. In fact, The Cure just played Madison Square Garden here last month, this band would have been a perfect opener.
My wife will tell you I’m not much of a dancer unless it’s a circle pit, but if they ever came stateside, I’d be out on that dance floor happily dancing to their somehow sorrowfully upbeat music!
