SCUM (Society for Cutting Up Misogynists) was founded in 2021 in Baltimore, MD primarily as a response to the glaring sexism observed in the local punk scene, and to confront the lack of bands with a coherent feminist message. They released their self-titled demo, which was recorded in a shed, in 2022. The current lineup consists of Mak on drums, Abigail on bass, Madeline on guitar, and Nemo on vocals. Using the term coined by the New Philly, PA-based band Bleeders, SCUM describes their music as “gash-rock,” feminist punk/noise rock that transcends the flawed liberal politics associated with the Riot Grrrl movement. SCUM can often be found around Baltimore performing at bars, living rooms and under bridges.
