E.P. Mattson Debut Single: “Automatic Ovulator” is out Now!
From the first chord of this rockin’ new song, I’m taken back to CBGB’s in the 1970’s with a distinct similarity to the New York Dolls with some bubblegum pop thrown in. Besides the obvious essentials in such a song i.e. the guitar, drums, etc. I really enjoyed the accented clapping, the scream and the moaning that certainly fits with this theme of some sort of physical intimacy.
"Automatic Ovulator" appears to explore themes of technology, relationships, and the blurred lines between the human and the artificial. The lyrics use playful and sometimes surreal imagery to convey a sense of connection and attraction to something that is not traditionally human. The song seems to invite interpretation and raises questions about the nature of love and connection in a technologically advanced world. It’s a little hard to discern whether the intimacy is indeed with a non-human object or whether that is a metaphor for a lover that operates like a machine. I’ll leave it up to the listener to co-construct meaning on your own.
I don’t normally go into bios of artists, but since this artist is unique in that they have a long career in art and writing that predates this musical debut. So I am admittedly just going to copy and past from IMDB because I doubt I could say it any differently:
“E. P. Mattson is a multimedia artist providing matte painting, pre-comp, projection mapping and concept design services to VFX clients worldwide. Three of the films he contributed matte paintings to crossed one billion dollars in worldwide gross; The Joker, Fate Of The Furious and Beauty And The Beast.
After earning his BA in Painting, E. P. headed to LA to work in entertainment, and for the last 18 years he's been an artist in visual effects. In 2018 he released The Opulence Of Invention, his debut book of poetry and illustrations, rated 4.5 stars on Amazon, #TheOpulenceOfInvention.”
Back to the song, there is a dope video that I’ve enjoyed watching several times as I worked on this review. It’s a got a rad psychedelic feel to it and adds some emphasis to some of the euphemism in the lyrics:
