Bullet to the Heart’s Newest EP: Death, Oddities, and Romance will be a Goth Metal Classic!
Bullet to the Heart have just released their newest EP: Death, Oddities and Romance not be to be confused with the 1990’s album by the Circle Jerks: Oddities, Abnormalities and Curiosities although I’d have loved have heard Bullet’s vocalist, Audrey Queen do the same backing vocals that Debbie Gibson did in her surprise appearance on that punk classic.
Gothic metal, alternative metal, or symphonic power metal are all terms that I could see used to described this ethereal metal gloom metal on this album (Those are my words). I’m currently on audiobook two of The Game of Thrones series, and having seen the HBO show, I can see how parts of these songs would have made for a dynamic soundtrack at parts of the show or in the audiobook.
The female vocals are reminiscent of Lacuna Coil or Evanescence or if one were to dig a little deeper bands like Delain or Theater of Tragedy. The music is epic and filled with uplifting yet heavy melodies. I can see why they are touring with Yngwie Malmsteen. I still remember jamming to Fire and Ice in 8th grade. Wait a second? Game of Thrones' author started the book series in the 1990’s and named the series A Song of Ice and Fire. Hmmmm secret Yngwie fan?
Back to the EP. When I was a middle school teacher, I used to have students summarize things using just 6 words a la the famous Hemmingway “poem”: Baby Shoes for Sale Never Worn, so here is my 6 word summaries of the lyrics of each song:
Black Widow: Righteous Vengeance Chilling Laugh Consequence Sentence
Revenant: Darkness Imprisons Light Speaks Void Frees
Graveyard Lovers Lyrics: Love is Love Life marries Death
Death By Sea: Siren’s Song Seek Fortune Death Below
Post Mortem: Final Words Life Equals Death Dust
Besides the aforementioned band comparisons, I heard some Type O Negative in the guitar and bass sounds that brought me back to the mid-90’s when gothic metal and gothic industrial was so pervasive that I couldn’t get into a car without hearing Peter Steele, Trent Reznor or Glenn Danzig’s voice.
Each song is ladened with great noir and macabre story telling with technical yet rocking music, so if you are the type that just loves the riffs and beats, that’s there for you. If you love a good melody to sing along too (albeit few of us have the range of Audrey), or dig deep into good lyrics, this band is for you.
My only complaint is a lack of physical album, but that’s me and my stupid vinyl loving ass’s problem. But surely I can’t be alone??
