The Bingo Boy’s Newest Album, Freak Out and Leave, Makes Me Want to Crank that Shit All Night!

Hot damn! I love that midwester punk rock! These dudes bring the mother fucking noise! They are a three piece–my favorite type of band, and their sound is so friggin’ thick! They meld so many great influences in their slice of punk rock. Think: Replacements meets Melvins meets The Dicks with hints of proto punk i.e. Stooges and MC5. They just opened for the Subhumans, one of my favorite bands, so I hope everyone dug that as much as I did. They have released a new album–though it doesn’t seem to have a physical option which sucks, ‘cause I’d buy it if they did. Here’s my one time listen review of each song. Keep in mind that I’m a drummer and not a musician.

Sick Thing: Song opens with a dope nasty bass intro. The garage style is evident in the vocals. The guitars are heavily distorted and fuzzy and the bass and drums thump away like a tequila hangover. Good start.

Donuts: This is like a very aggressive and fast Stooges or MC5. The band is teetering on the edge, like the drummer wants to play faster and the others are just able to keep up, but only barely. They are about to go all Thelma and Louise on this shit. It sounds great like a panicked balancing act of highwire meth addicts.

Ugly Man: This song is more midtempo. I can really feel the grunge in there. The scream at the end is killer!

Still awhile: If that’s not clapping in the beginning, it should be. You can thank me later for the suggestion. Heavy and catchy–a killer combination.

On: This one starts heavy and looks to be an outright banger, then it gets mid tempo and more singable but without losing the rock.

Fake It: They say the “song is a little dissonant” but I almost winced at the outset, but not in a bad way, in a way that early Dinosaur Jr. might have made me go what the fuck is that sound?

Over/Under: Abrasive in your face musically and vocally. A non-stop rager. I’ve heard faster, and heavier and yet this still feels so heavy and fast. Once again it’s like they are just on the verge of losing control.

Relief: My ears said, hello, this is a quick little break. Almost reminiscent of early Lemonheads with a touch of Nirvana in the way the vocals are sung if only because they make me think of the same vocal rhythm and melody in a song whose name isn’t coming to my mind as of yet.

Stuck: There is a killer lead under that highly catchy chorus that is just dope as fuck.

Nice: The longest song on the album and still under 2:30. A mid-temp rocker that neither offended nor delighted. As my Dad says about most of the music I make, “It’s very nice, Scott” although I mean it more sincerely than he does.

Bongsweat: Cool rhythm both musically and vocally on this track. I could dance to it and mosh to it.

Methmouth: Love the screaming vocals in the chorus as a counterpoint to the cleanly sung verse.

Roll: Damn! The end of Methmouth had a pause that was just short and longe enough that I thought the part that came after was some kind of dope bridge that didn’t quite fit but did because of the length of the pause. It was actually the start of this song. I’m hoping they do that pause live and then roll right into “Roll”.

So yeah, I’d go check these guys out live if they ever came to NY for sure or buy some of their shit if it was physical. If their live energy matches their studio stuff, we may need to talk about a live album one day.
