Dream Nails Release New Single: “Sometimes I Do Get Lonely”
“Sometimes I do Get Lonely” by Dream Nails is a little outside of my usual musical undertaking, as it doesn’t fit an easy description or within the boundaries of what is often considered “punk” but I just really dug the energy and emotion of this track of their new album Doom Loop. The mix of the song with the drums in the forefront work really well with the hip hop flow of the lyrics. The chorus reminds me of something I’d hear on an 80’s new wave record and when the verse hits it reminds me of rants that I’d hear on a Crass or Conflict album.
Lyrically the song depicts the struggles and frustrations of feeling stuck in a mundane all too often challenging life. While I assume any sympathy they are showing for men who feel like they are mistreated is tongue in cheek, they also seem to announce a disconnect with the feminist movement. This disconnect seems pervasive as the song theme of loneliness permeates the song as a recurring theme, wherein they turn to online communities for solace, finding comfort in the shared experiences of others who feel similarly isolated—truth? Sarcasm? Mixed in throughout are moments of questioning of privilege, challenging societal expectations and highlighting personal struggles with debt and a shit ass job at Londis. Despite the energy of the song, the lyrics hint at a sense of emotional resignation, as they acknowledge loneliness but claim to be accustomed to it. I read the reference to taking the "red pill" to a rejection of the way the mainstream perceives the world. But who the fuck am I to say what they mean? Knowledge is co-constructed in a conversation between the content and the consumer. Give it a fucking listen yourself and you determine what the interaction of the lyrics and the music means to you cause that’s all that really matters.
