Empty Page Releases New Single: “Cock of the Fifth Year”
Empty Page’s single, “Cock of the Fifth Year”, off their new LP, Imploding, is a kick ass mix of punk and grunge. This two piece reminds me a bit of The Cut Rate Druggists, and I could see them rocking a tour together or releasing a split 7”. The super fuzzed out guitars that also go all angular and jangly over a solid as fuck drumming with vocals that are fucking pissed as they should be.
The title makes me think it’s about the jock assholes who thought they were the shit during their four years of high school now thinking they are still the shit afterwards. From what I can gather their song is a great reversal of the old phrase about locking up your daughters to protect their chastity and virtue and instead call for us you to “lock up your son” because even the seemingly “nice guy” is too often a furious asshole waiting for a woman to manipulate or abuse. The scream about the sense of entitlement makes me think of the incels who blame women for not wanting to be with them versus not seeing their own faults.
This song takes me back to the heyday of Riotgrrrl bands without sounding like any of them in particular. It’s more the message against toxic masculinity and overwhelming patriarchy that really makes me feel that way. I’m digging it for sure.
