Irked Release New Single: “Backstreets”

Oh this is some rad ass shit and judging by the lyrical content, the ferocity of the music, and the righteously venomous anger and resentment that emanate from the vocals, to say they are irked is quite the understatement. Bringing in politically charged DIY punk akin to bands like G.L.O.S.S., Gouge Away and the Dead Kennedy’s this band packs a lot into a short and furious song about men who harass and stalk and are just plain pieces of shit. Told from the various points of view and from what seems like some personal experience, this is a call to take back the streets from those that see it as their place to prey on others. Fuck them. As a straight white cisgendered male, I have never had to feel this way, and the fact that anyone has had to just shows how fucked men can be and how much more work needs to be done to fight back, educate and ensure that entitled asshole men no longer get a pass and instead get what they deserve.

Not sure when they are going to release more stuff, but if a vinyl comes out with more songs, I’ll be quick to snatch this up.

I’ve posted the video and the Spotify link below, and I don’t normally post the lyrics but these are too good not to share, so you can make sure you get the full experience of the song when you listen:

Well - it’s about bloody time that you lock up your sons
Your daughters aren’t the problem
Girls just wanna have fun

I’m absolutely sick of talking about men,
The most boring conversations
Revolve around them

I’m sick to the back teeth, of hearing about them
Another one another one, again and again
But please allow me the space
Indulge me some more, it’s really quite cathartic now I’ve got the floor

You, do, not choose! Time to - do your primal risk assessment

Running down the backstreets, looking for cover
Got that look in his eye says he wants to get to know ya
Running down the backstreets, looking for trouble
Got that look in his eye says he’s got something to show ya
Running down the backstreets, looking for cover
Got your keys in your hand and one eye over your shoulder
Running down the backstreets, looking for trouble
Got that look in his eye says he wants to get to know ya

It happens once, you let it slide, he didn’t really mean it he’s a really nice guy
Happens twice, must be a coincidence, boys will be boys they’ve got no common sense

Happens again, but she was complicit, she changed her mind but they’d already did it
The next time, they’d had too much to drink ,not his fault he just doesn’t think

Then time number five, but nobody saw it, he took what he wanted an a little bit more
By now it’s becoming a habit, you turn a blind eye cause he might grow out of it

It happens again, now he’s getting a rep, when he’s had a few drinks he turns into a letch
The next time, but nobody pulls him, it’s awkward for them and not really their problem

Then again, if it we true, somebody would have said something by now wouldn't you,
I know you are, I said you are, but what am I?

You’re here by yourself and I’m a really nice guy
I wouldn’t normally give this a try, but i saw you looking over, and you caught my eye

Come over here, I wanna get to know you,
I’m a really shy guy and I’ve got something to show ya

You, do, not choose! Time to - do your primal risk assessment

Running down the backstreets, looking for cover
Got that look in his eye says he wants to get to know ya
Running down the backstreets, looking for trouble
Got that look in his eye says he’s got something to show ya
Running down the backstreets, looking for cover
Got your keys in your hand and one eye over your shoulder
Running down the backstreets, looking for trouble
Got that look in his eye says he wants to get to know ya
