Whippets Release New Single: “Splinter”

The Whippets are back with a new single, “Splinter”, off their new self-titled LP released by No Coast Records. Similar to the last song I reviewed, “Ice”, this new song spans so many influences that it is hard to pin down genre-wise or comparison wise.

The tracks opens with this thick gnarly bass riff that just fucking chokes and then they layer this surf style guitar work overtop which makes me feel like I’m back in Okinawa where my dad was stationed, and I’m watching my favorite 1970’s Japanese anime which is not a fucking bad thing at all.

After that the drums bring some poundage and provide a fucking rad beat as the band kicks up the distortion that reminds me of 90’s grunge or bands like The Jesus Lizard. The vocals at points particularly during the higher-inflections remind me a bit of the vocals by DC garage rock band The Shakedowns from the early 2000’s.

So yeah—punk, grunge, surf, garage rock, and probably something else I missed all fucking mixed together into what I’d just call fucking awesome. The ending is my favorite. Fucking great.
