Decoy Releases New EP: Re:Selection!
Decoy from Baton Rouge, LA recently signed with Upstate Records ,one of the best hardcore labels out there, as evidenced by the shows my band has played with other bands on their roster: Angry Corpses, Silence Equals Death and Concrete Ties to name a few. As such it was not the least bit surprising how fucking sick Decoy’s new three song EP is! Re:Selection hits hard with three fucking bangers of metallic hardcore for fans of bands like Hatebreed, Converge, Vein and All Shall Perish.
The opening of the first song, “Personality Disorder,” demonstrates how fucking tight they were with the drums and riffage in perfect synchronicity before going into a fast paced hardcore verse. All of this is followed by gnarly breakdown and vocals that go deep and growly while also scraping that back of the throat for some more high pitched screams. There’s a rad bridge that takes it down just a notch before it fucking comes back. Love the little flourishes like when the everything drops out for just a few beats to let the double bass take center stage.
“SMG” is another brutal as fuck banger. The vocals are still in your face but a bit more discernible along hardcore lines and similar to other two songs it seems to be about emotional and mental pain/struggles which is perfectly fitting for this music. I was totally not expecting that bridge with the really almost atmospheric melodic part. Very fucking cool. Absolutely fucking dig how much the riffage and the bass drums lock in together. Fucking tight!
“Natural Selection” opens with some dope double guitar riffage where they really do a solid ass fucking job of playing off and interacting with each other. Love the melodic guitar work around the 1:30 minute mark. And again towards the end as it counter points the breakdown riffage. And it fucking stops and ends on a fucking dime making you wish more was coming.
Make sure you got to Bandcamp to listen and buy their shit and get stoked for whatever release they will have forthcoming from Upstate Records!
