Mr. P. Reviews Dope Music
Stefan West Releases New Single: “Happily Ever After”
Stefan West reminds me of Dave Hause mixed with the Weakerthans with is mix of pop punk, emo and folk punk.
Family Man Releases New Single: “I Am The One”
Family Man has so much going on. It starts off with as sick bassline with rad synths overlayed with frantic vocal rhythm like someone has had twenty cups of coffee too many—sort of reminds me a little of something I’d hear on a Faith No More song or the rapid fire talking in songs like “Institutionalized” by Suicidal Tendencies.
Spirit of Wildfire Release New Single: “Big Data”
Spirit of the Wildfire from Nova Scotia really bring the fucking rock on this song.
Dark Dazey Releases New Single: “Junk”
Dark Dazey are a psychedelic rock for the modern era with influences ranging from King Gizzard & The Wizard Lizard to Thee Oh Sees to Psychedelic Porn Crumpets.
Unit 47 Releases New Single: “Rock N’ Roll Band”
Not to overstate the obvious due to the song title, but this is a rad ass rock n’ roll band.
Piece Releases New Single: “Blood Sheets”
This DIY duo of “sickness” reminds me of shit maybe Big Black would have done.
Labasheeda Releases New Album: Blueprints!
One of the best parts about reviewing music is hearing new music and often from artists that were not even on my radar by any stretch of the imagination. This is the case with Labasheeda from Amsterdam and their new album, Blueprints.
Friend Release New Single: “Bored To Death”
Friend is back with another rad ass single. I reviewed “All the Money in the World” back in October, and this song, “Bored to Death” is even better.
Strange Men Release New Single: “Hot Nights”
Strange Men had me from the get go with the dope opening riff and the screamed group vocals that remind me a bit of X if they were on some DIY tape recording during riot grrrls hey day in the 1990’s.
Frightwig Release New Single: “Redistribution of Wealth”
So I’m a little surprised this is the first I’ve heard of Frightwig. They’ve been around on and off since the 1980’s and could easily be considered forerunners of the riot grrrl scene that was part of my teens in the early 1990s.
Outerloop Releases New Single: “huracán”
First off, I have to acknowledge my own bias—not only is this a DC band which means I’m emotionally connected to where they are from, but I’m also going to be releasing a live album with them in 2024, so I already think their music is sick as fuck. With that being said, I’ve loved many a band or album and then been disappointed by subsequent releases, but that is not the case here in the fucking slightest.
Irish Basement Releases New Single: Black Cat
Besides the fact that I love the Joy Division/Cure sound coming off this song, I was totally in as soon as I heard the lyrics talking about one of my favorite DC venues: The Black Cat! And mentioning Bmore is just an extra plus.
Luminatrix Release New Single: “China Again”!
Luminatrix is one of those bands that defies an exact category. I’m sure they’d be called garage rock or indie rock, but that has as much meaning as alternative did in the 1990s when I was a teen. It could mean a band like Jane’s Addiction or it could mean a band like Mudhoney or The Minutemen or Violent Femmes none of which sound remotely similar.
