Mr. P. Reviews Dope Music
Mason Via Releases New Single: “Falling”
If I had to compare this to any (folk) punk it might a mix of Greg Graffin’s solo work like American Lesion or maybe a touch of Run Rabbit Run.
Faraway Dogs Release New Single: “Ghost Song”
Played with excellent musicianship (pretty sure I hear some mandolin, some banjo, and a fiddle) and sung with passion; this song had me hooked from the first listen.
Water Tower Releases New Single: “Lose Everything”
While this certainly leans more towards blue grass in most of it’s elements both the subject matter of addiction and the honest and energetic delivery allows for me to make some connections with folk punk.
Spencer Jo Releases New Single: “Quiet Violence”
Their new single, “Quiet Violence” is another reason everyone should be ordering their new full length EP: The Water released in collaboration with Meter Records, Momentsfestsiksika, and Sawdust Records.
Marc-Alan Prince Releases New EP: Unforgiven
Marc-Alan Prince’s folk punk is heartfelt and earnest…
Spencer Jo & Ghostly Hounds Release New Single: “Talking to Myself”
Right off the bat this “Talking to Myself” by Spencer Jo and Ghostly Hounds had me thinking of Against Me!. Specifically the phrasing of the vocals reminded me of “I was a teenage anarchist”, but this is by no means an Against Me! clone. I hear elements of Tim Barry, Frank Turner and Chuck Ragan in this.
Adrian and Meredith Release New Single: “NFT”
Adrian and Meredith’s new single, “NFT”, made me immediately think of Gogol Bordello mixed with Squirrel Nut Zippers. The song is catchy, dancey and lyrically interesting as they try to explore what is the value of art and who decides that value.
Ryan Cassata and The Top Surgeons Release New EP: This Machine Kills Transphobia
Ryan Cassata with band, The Top Surgeons, provide us an EP that is a dope mix of punk, folk, grunge, indie rock, and a pure fucking awesome.
Bad Friends with Black Cats Release New Single: “Okay Bye”
Bad Friends with Black Cats’ new song “Okay Bye” starts off as a folk punk sound that reminds me of Sticky Steve and Mischief Brew i.e. fucking rad.
Gab De La Vega Releases New Album: Life Burns
It’s always great to get sent music that I’m totally unaware of and that I get to listen to without any preconceived ideas of what I’m gonna get. It’s with this mindset that I hit play on the Life Burns, the newest release from Gab De La Vega, and my mind couldn’t have been more pleased.
One Last Job Releases New Single: “Another Night”
One Last Night has released “Another Night” a folky punk tune with some rad horn parts particularly in the chorus.
The Ugly Cowboys Releases: “Life Sucks, Do Drugs”
Despite the fact that I didn’t have a "cheap vodka & bong rips" period during college and my general lack of drug experience, I find this to be one catchy ass fucking song.
MOFGY Releases New Single: “Whoop-De-Doo”
MOFGY’s new single, “Whoop-De-Doo” has a folk sound with a lo-fi style recording that reminds me of Pete Seeger or Woodie Guthrie with a punk soul.
The Flatnoise Releases New Single: “Living in the Front Row”
I reviewed their single “Misunderstood” a few weeks ago, so I was stoked to see hear this new tune.
Nolen & Friends Release New Single: “Sailboat Song”
What is the line between folk music and folk punk? Does it matter? Folk often has told stories that are true to life and punk has always been about sharing what you feel to the fullest. So much like I’ve argued that a lot of hip hop is as punk as the most circle pit worthy song, so is so much of recent folk music that fits the punk ethos if not the standardized sound.
Hurrican Holly Releases New Album: “Screaming the Storm Out”
So I came of age in the early 1990’s and while Hurricane Holly doesn’t specifically sound like Jewel, Paula Cole nor Ani Difranco, I could still see them all playing a show together.
You Had Me at “Fuck Florida”!
Dominic Delaney follows that punk troubadour a la Frank Turner, Billy Bragg, Tim Barry, Jacob -Danielsen-Moore, Sticky Steve and more. As a former captive of Florida for 15 years who managed to escape to NY, I can fully endorse his sentiment in the title if not his final admission that he’s actually a Floridian…something I was never able to accept.
