Mr. P. Reviews Dope Music
WASSON!? Release New Single: “Shoulder to Shoulder”
This is one of those songs. It’s a punk alternative song sung with heartfelt sincerity that is moving lyrically while also providing a music that somehow allows you to want to be a happy in the midst of your sadness.
Labasheeda Releases New Album: Blueprints!
One of the best parts about reviewing music is hearing new music and often from artists that were not even on my radar by any stretch of the imagination. This is the case with Labasheeda from Amsterdam and their new album, Blueprints.
Abstract Releases Folk Punk Single: Up Yet!
We all know the story. Punk rocker gets old, puts down electric guitar and picks up acoustic to become a folk punk troubadour: Tim Barry, Chuck Ragan, Tony Sly, Dave Hause, Frank Turner, etc., but this may be the first time I’ve known of a hip-hop artist putting down his beats and changing up spitting out dope ass flow to playing acoustic guitar while singing pop punk melodies.
The Flatnoise Release New Single: “Misunderstood”
There are a lot of folk punk artists out there, and I love a lot of them and have released an album with four of them, but it’s a little odd to have a folk punk ensemble. I dig this for sure. It’s got all the elements of pop punk but overlayed with folk guitar melodies.
Gender Reveal Atomic Bomb Releases New Single: “Generation Atomic Bomb”
Damn this band just rips. I’m loving this new single especially how I can’t give it a direct comparison to anything.
Modern Shakes Releases New Single: “Icing on the Cake”
Damn. Worst part about running behind on reviews is that this banger has been out for a month, and I’m only now just giving it a good listen. This is some rad up-tempo punk rock.
This is a Revolver Release New Single: “Arrivederci!”
First thing that hits me with this song is brief organ intro that gives way abruptly to a killer bass riff which builds up with guitars and drums to kick into a full fucking brutal sonic assault that should get any young punk a circle pitting (maybe even a few older ones too).
Le Bongè Release New Single: “Hey Genius”
Le Bongè brings us the pure essence of punk rock n’ roll in this 52 second banger!
Paranormal Arson Release New Self-Titled Album
This my kind of metal, dirty fucking sludge death metal with narrative story-are lyrics growled at you with all the guttural vehemence of a rabid pack of starved feral wolverines.
Los Inconformes Releases New Single: “Culpa”
From the moment I hit play on Los Inconformes’s new song “Culpa” I was read to start dancing. The ska beat mixed with Latin influences is irresistible.
The Sons of James Release New Single: “Boswell”
I reviewed “All They Told You” for the The Sons of James back in August, and I’m stoked to check out their new single!
This song starts with a rad tom based drum beat and then punchy but melodic vocals and guitar feedback come in and build up until it kicks into a full punk rock anthem.
BAÏKI Releases New Single: “Les boites”
My first exposure to this song was just the pure audio, and it was a fun punk jam with a big chorus that I’d sing along too if only I knew the words. Good shit indeed. Then I watched the video with English subtitles, and I was even more taken with the song. Visually it looks like a kid’s TV show like Yo Gabba Gabba, but content wise, despite it’s humorous composition, it is actually sort of dark as the four actors in the video eventually rebel against the director and put him in his own box—ostensibly forever.
Friend Release New Single: “Bored To Death”
Friend is back with another rad ass single. I reviewed “All the Money in the World” back in October, and this song, “Bored to Death” is even better.
Strange Men Release New Single: “Hot Nights”
Strange Men had me from the get go with the dope opening riff and the screamed group vocals that remind me a bit of X if they were on some DIY tape recording during riot grrrls hey day in the 1990’s.
Twisted Limbs Release New Single: “Battery”
Twisted Limbs from Ottawa bring a dope mix of punk and grunge. Musically you’ve got muted guitar riffs with anguished vocals that build into a big chorus and even more cries for relief from the misery that occurs in life.
Frightwig Release New Single: “Redistribution of Wealth”
So I’m a little surprised this is the first I’ve heard of Frightwig. They’ve been around on and off since the 1980’s and could easily be considered forerunners of the riot grrrl scene that was part of my teens in the early 1990s.
Jersey Calling Releases New Album: Parasocial Security
Jersey Calling has released their new album Parasocial Security on all digital streaming platforms on 11/1/2023, and despite being from Jersey, it’s a kick ass collection of pop punk rockage! (Just kidding—Jersey’s okay…”if you like saxophones”!). Okay enough of me making with the jokes lets get to the review:
Mark Vennis & Different Place Release New Single: “Small Town Vampire”
The second I hit play on “Small Town Vampire” by Mark Vennis and Different Place, I was taken back to 1992 when I bought a two tape punk rock compilation with bands like The Vibrators, The Buzzcocks, The Members, The Adverts, etc. This band’s mix of brit pop with 70’s punk rock would have fit right in on those compilations.
Outerloop Releases New Single: “huracán”
First off, I have to acknowledge my own bias—not only is this a DC band which means I’m emotionally connected to where they are from, but I’m also going to be releasing a live album with them in 2024, so I already think their music is sick as fuck. With that being said, I’ve loved many a band or album and then been disappointed by subsequent releases, but that is not the case here in the fucking slightest.
Al'Tarba & Senbeï Release New Single: “Back Again”
This hits with my love of the Beastie Boys both their hip hop and their forays into hardcore punk. This French group mixes DJ Shadow, Fatboy Slim and Prodigy with classic 80’s style hardcore.
